Canva PDF Fonts Shift After Download: Flattening Has a Tradeoff

Choose between a fixed visual appearance and selectable, accessible text.

Quick answer

If a PDF looks different in another viewer, compare a normal PDF export with a flattened PDF. Flattening can preserve appearance, but it turns content into a static image and removes accessibility tags. For a document readers need to search, select, or use with a screen reader, keep an unflattened accessible version and fix the font or layout instead.

Confirm where the text changes

Open the downloaded PDF in two viewers and compare it with the Canva editor. A change seen in only one viewer may be a viewing or font-rendering issue. A change in every PDF viewer points toward the exported file. Keep the original unflattened PDF for this comparison.

  1. Check which page and text boxes differ.
  2. Compare line breaks, missing characters, and font weight separately.
  3. Export a single problem page as a test.

Test a flattened copy only for visual delivery

Canva offers Flatten PDF under the PDF download’s Advanced Settings. It merges elements into a static image and can help fonts display consistently. The file may grow, and text will no longer behave like ordinary editable PDF text. Test this on a copy for print or fixed visual sharing.

Worth checking

Canva says flattened PDFs do not support its accessibility tags. Do not use flattening as a silent fix when screen-reader access matters.

Keep the usable version

For an accessible document, leave Flatten PDF unchecked, review the Canva accessibility settings, and correct a troublesome font or layout in the design. For a print-only file, inspect the flattened output at full size before sending it. Preserve both exports if the audiences have different needs.

If the document will be printed and also posted online, produce two checked files from the same source design: one visually fixed print copy and one unflattened digital copy. Give them clear filenames so nobody accidentally posts the print copy as the accessible one. Reopen both files after export, because the checkbox setting alone does not prove the final pages look and behave as expected.
