For most TikTok-first video production, a vertical 9:16 composition is the natural starting point. It fits the full-screen viewing experience and gives you room to show a person or product clearly. The exact accepted file specifications depend on whether the video is organic, Spark, Non-Spark or another advertising format.
Choose the destination format before editing. A single rule such as “all TikTok ads must be under 60 seconds” can be outdated or wrong for the selected product. Use the current official specification page and the upload editor for the exact campaign.
Current auction in-feed reference
TikTok’s June 2026 auction in-feed documentation distinguishes Spark and Non-Spark assets. For Non-Spark video, it lists vertical 9:16 at least 540 by 960 pixels, horizontal 16:9 at least 960 by 540 and square 1:1 at least 640 by 640. It also lists duration up to ten minutes, file size up to 500 MB and bitrate of at least 516 kbps.
Those are technical acceptance limits, not a creative recommendation to use the lowest resolution or longest duration. Check the live specification for your selected format because other products can differ.
Choose a production master
A practical production choice is a high-quality vertical master, such as 1080 by 1920, when the source footage supports it. This is a production recommendation rather than a claim that every placement requires that exact resolution. Preserve an editable version so alternate crops can be created later.
Avoid enlarging a tiny source clip and expecting it to become detailed. Start with clean footage, stable framing and adequate light. Compression can reduce quality further, so the original should be as clear as the production permits.
Aspect ratio changes the composition
| Shape | Production consideration |
|---|---|
| Vertical 9:16 | Frame the subject for a phone screen and reserve space for interface elements |
| Square 1:1 | Check whether the selected ad format supports it and whether the subject remains large enough |
| Horizontal 16:9 | Confirm suitability and avoid making important detail too small in the viewing context |
Do not crop a horizontal interview into vertical without inspecting the speaker, gestures and product. A deliberate alternate composition is usually clearer than an automatic center crop that cuts off the demonstration.
Safe zones are part of the design
TikTok’s documentation explains that safe-zone needs depend on dimensions, caption length and additional formats or elements. Use the appropriate current template or preview rather than memorizing a universal margin.
Keep key claims, product details and captions away from areas covered by interface controls. A demonstration can fail even when the file meets every technical requirement if the important action happens behind a button or caption block.
For a product-size video, put the measurement and product near the usable center while leaving breathing room. Test the actual ad with its caption and call to action, because those choices affect the viewing experience.
Make text readable on a real phone
Use concise captions with sufficient contrast and a size that remains readable at normal viewing distance. Do not place a full paragraph over the product. Break supporting information into moments that match the spoken or demonstrated point.
Review automatic captions carefully. Product names, numbers and technical terms are easy to transcribe incorrectly. A wrong dimension can mislead a buyer even if the voiceover is accurate.
Choose duration from the explanation
The video should last long enough to make the useful point and short enough to avoid unnecessary repetition. A simple product action may need only a brief demonstration. A complex explanation may need more time, provided each section earns its place.
Do not stretch a short idea to fill an arbitrary duration or compress a necessary explanation until it becomes unintelligible. Test different structures when the customer question supports them. Technical maximum duration and effective creative duration are different decisions.
Sound should support comprehension
Record speech clearly and balance music so it does not mask the message. Ensure essential meaning is also available through captions or visuals for people who cannot listen. Check commercial usage rights for the audio before publication.
A fashionable sound is not a substitute for an understandable offer. If it distracts from the demonstration, use a simpler approach. Listen on a phone speaker as well as headphones to catch problems hidden by an editing setup.
Export and inspect the file
- Confirm the selected ad product and its current specifications.
- Export in a supported file format and appropriate dimensions.
- Check duration, file size and quality.
- Watch the exported file from beginning to end.
- Inspect captions, sound, crop and the final frame.
- Upload and review the platform preview with the actual ad details.
Watching the timeline in an editor is not the same as checking the exported file. Compression, missing media or a wrong export range can create problems that were not visible during editing.
Spark content needs its own check
Spark Ads use an authorized organic post, and the official specification distinguishes their behavior from uploaded Non-Spark creative. Confirm the post is suitable for paid use and that the authorization covers the intended campaign.
Do not assume an organic video’s caption or presentation can be changed freely inside the advertising flow. Inspect the actual available controls and preview. If the source post needs a factual correction, resolve that before promoting it.
Troubleshoot an upload failure
Read the exact error and compare the file against the relevant specification. Check file format, dimensions, duration, size and whether the file plays correctly outside the editor. Export a clean version from the source if the file appears corrupted.
If the file uploads but looks wrong, the problem may be composition rather than acceptance. Review crop and safe zones instead of repeatedly changing bitrate. Keep a known-good export preset for the format after it has been verified.
Save a reusable delivery package
Retain source footage, project files, licensed audio records and the final exports. Name versions by concept, aspect ratio and revision. A well-organized package makes future claim corrections, localization and alternate placements much easier.
The right format is one the platform accepts and the viewer can understand. Technical compliance gets the file through the door; clear composition makes the video useful.
