First check that autoexec.cfg is inside the installed CS2 folder game/csgo/cfg. Then put an echo marker in the file and run exec autoexec from a local practice map. If the marker appears, the file loaded—the problem is a command inside it or a later settings override.
What fails when you run autoexec?
These three symptoms look alike, but they need different fixes.
File not found: Check the installed game/csgo/cfg folder, exact spelling, and hidden .txt extension.
Troubleshoot the cfg in six checks
Keep your existing autoexec intact while testing a small, harmless marker.
In Steam, right-click CS2 → Manage → Browse local files. Open game/csgo/cfg from there.
Enable file extensions in Explorer and confirm the file is autoexec.cfg, not autoexec.cfg.txt.
Back up the file, then add echo "WB_AUTOEXEC_LOADED" near the start. Save and run exec autoexec in the console.
Join your own practice map and run exec autoexec again. Record whether the marker appears and whether the setting changes.
Watch the console for “unknown command,” permission errors or a variable that reverts. Temporarily isolate the one failing line in a copy.
Put your private practice commands in practice_wb.cfg and execute exec practice_wb after the map loads.
What the console result tells you
Use one marker to separate the file-loading problem from a command problem.
Check folder, name, extension and console message.
Look for bad commands, quotes or later overrides.
Check server permissions and reapply after map load.
echo "WB_AUTOEXEC_LOADED"
Save it inside autoexec.cfg; then type exec autoexec in CS2. You can remove the marker afterward.
Why practice mode can make a working config look broken
Two events can happen after your file loads: the game can replace a value, or the server can refuse an operation.
Values can be applied again when practice begins.
Some practice commands work only where the server allows them.
Do not wipe all configs to fix one line
Avoid deleting personal cfg directories, disabling security software, or pasting a replacement autoexec from an unknown site. Back up the original and test one change at a time.
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the most common follow-ups.
Should I type exec autoexec.cfg or exec autoexec?
Both forms are seen in CS2 references; exec autoexec is the usual simple check for a correctly placed autoexec.cfg.
Why does autoexec work in the menu but not practice?
The practice mode may replace values when it loads, or a particular command may need permission that the current server does not grant.
Where should autoexec.cfg be saved?
The active CS2 installation’s game/csgo/cfg folder. Use Steam’s Browse local files so you open the correct library.
What does “Unable to read file” mean?
Start with the path, actual extension and exact filename. It is primarily a file lookup problem, not proof of a game-wide bug.
Will +exec autoexec in Steam launch options fix practice commands?
It can request autoexec at startup, but it does not prevent later game-mode overrides or change server permissions.
