This is mostly a late-game or heavily modded problem. The good news: the limit is higher now, and the fix is usually simple—find the swollen save, clean the inventory bloat, then make a fresh manual save.
Start here.
Use this quick reference first, then do the easy steps below.
Save Folder Inspector
Use this as a quick checklist while you inspect your local save folder.
Update 2.3 raised the cap, but a bloated modded save can still become unstable if you keep stacking junk.
Do this in order.
A direct walkthrough without unnecessary detours.
Back up the save first.
Copy the full save folder to a safe location before changing anything.
Inspect sav.dat.
Right-click the file, open Properties, and note the size. If it is abnormally large, inventory bloat is the usual suspect.
Clean stash clutter.
Sell or dismantle duplicate crafted weapons, clothing copies, junk stacks, and test items from mods.
Remove broken mod items.
If you use overhaul mods, old or invalid items can inflate a save. Store them, delete them with the mod's tools, or uninstall carefully according to the mod author's instructions.
Make a brand-new manual save.
After cleaning up, create a fresh save in a new slot instead of overwriting the swollen one.
What usually makes the file grow?
- Crafting spam: mass-producing weapons or components.
- Stash hoarding: keeping hundreds of duplicate items just in case.
- Heavy mods: old scripts, item overhauls, or debug/test inventories.
- Long sandbox saves: many activities, many vehicles, and lots of collectibles in one profile.
If corruption already happened, try loading an earlier manual save, cleaning inventory there, and creating a new file path instead of forcing the broken save onward.
Quick questions.
Where is the save folder?
Open %userprofile%\Saved Games\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077. Each save has its own folder.
Did Update 2.3 fully remove save corruption?
No. It raised the ceiling from 12 MB to 15 MB, which helps a lot, but extreme save bloat can still cause trouble.
What is the safest cleanup method?
Back up the save, dismantle or sell duplicate items, remove bugged mod items carefully, and then write a brand-new manual save.
