The quick answer

Check Epic server status, then restart your game and connection.

If Fortnite says “An error occurred while connecting to Epic servers,” first open Epic Games Public Status ↗. An outage can affect logins even when your Wi-Fi is fine. If services appear operational, fully restart Fortnite and your device, reconnect to the internet and try again. On PC, check whether Epic Games Launcher can sign in separately; that helps distinguish account/Launcher trouble from a Fortnite-only issue. Do not unlink your Epic account.

Where exactly does Fortnite fail to connect?

The screen where it stops is often more helpful than the generic message.

Before reaching the lobby If the error appears during Epic sign-in, check server status, quit the game completely and sign in through the Launcher or console normally. Check service status ↓
Simple checklist

4 easy things to try, in order

Use these four checks in order; stop once the game connects successfully.

01

Check Epic Games service status

Open the live Epic status page ↗ and check Fortnite and authentication services. If an outage or maintenance is listed, wait for the incident to be resolved rather than changing local settings.

Status information can lag a newly developing problem. Recheck it if many players suddenly lose access.

02

Quit Fortnite fully and sign in again

Close Fortnite completely rather than leaving it suspended. Restart your PC or console, reopen Epic Games Launcher if you use it, and try signing in again through your usual account. Check that your device date and time are correct.

Do not disconnect linked platform accounts or create a new Epic account to fix a temporary connection failure.

03

Restart router and test the network

If there is no known outage, restart your modem/router and test a wired connection if convenient. Pause big downloads and streaming. On Windows, avoid VPN/proxy services while troubleshooting, and follow Epic’s connection help ↗ if you see repeated errors.

If every online app fails, the network or internet provider may be the issue. If only Fortnite fails, note that distinction.

04

Use device-specific checks and contact support

On Windows, finish pending updates and clear only Epic Launcher’s documented cache if needed. On consoles, use the platform’s normal connection test and restart. If still blocked, note the exact screen and time and use Epic’s server connection guide ↗.

Do not disable your firewall, erase profiles or reinstall your operating system as a first attempt.

An Epic server message does not mean you lost your account.

A sign-in or server-connection failure is not proof of deleted cosmetics, an account ban or a broken console. Do not unlink or reset accounts. If the same warning appears only on one platform, record that detail for support.

Specific errors

If one part of the connection works

Different failure points need different follow-up actions.

I can log in to Epic Launcher but not Fortnite.

Check Fortnite-specific status, restart the game and verify that Fortnite is updated. If the failure is at the lobby, use Epic’s Fortnite login guidance ↗.

I can reach the lobby but get kicked from matches.

Use the networking indicators and look for packet loss. That is a distinct issue from not being able to authenticate; Epic explains in-game network stats ↗.

Only my Xbox shows “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue.”

Epic distinguishes the Xbox Queue message from a general Fortnite error and directs players to Microsoft support in its connection article ↗.

Should I change DNS or open router ports?

Not immediately. Complete the standard restart and status checks first, then follow Epic’s documented network steps ↗ only when the error persists.

Still unable to sign in?

Note your platform, the exact message, whether Epic Launcher itself logs in, whether other online games work, and the time the error started. Include screenshots in an official support request.

Common questions

Quick FAQs

Are Epic servers down whenever this message appears?

No. A server outage is one possible cause, but your own connection, Launcher session or device may also fail.

Will reinstalling Fortnite fix it?

Usually start with status and connection checks. Reinstalling is slow and unlikely to help during an Epic outage.

Can this happen on console and PC?

Yes. The general connection issue can affect different platforms, though the exact sign-in steps vary.

Does clearing cache delete my Fortnite skins?

A normal supported Launcher cache clear does not transfer or delete Epic account cosmetics. Avoid unrelated file deletion.

Should I use a VPN to make Fortnite connect?

No. Instead, test the normal network path and follow Epic’s documented connection checks. A VPN can add another variable.
