Fortnite HAGS Stutter — Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling Fix

Windows GPU scheduling can change frame pacing, but there is no single magic switch for every graphics card and driver.

The quick answer

Compare HAGS on and off with a full Windows restart each time.

Windows Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) may help some PCs and be neutral or worse on others. Epic currently includes enabling HAGS in its low-FPS guidance when available. If your own stutter began after turning it on, record the current state, switch the setting in Windows Graphics settings, restart, and compare the same Fortnite match scenario. Keep whichever setting delivers steadier frame times on your hardware.

Did a HAGS change actually affect Fortnite?

Separate a repeatable settings result from shader warm-up or a recent driver change.

Simple checklist

4 simple checks, in the right order

Start with the fastest reversible test, then move to the next check only if the symptom remains.

01

Find and record the current HAGS setting

On a supported Windows PC open Settings, System, Display, Graphics, then Default graphics settings or Change default graphics settings, depending on Windows build. Locate Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling if offered. Write down whether it is currently enabled.

Some hardware and Windows combinations will not show the switch.

02

Test the alternate position and restart Windows

Change HAGS once, then restart the PC. Launch Fortnite with the same rendering mode and resolution. Compare at least one similarly demanding playable scene, preferably after any first-match shader stutter has passed.

Skipping the restart can invalidate the comparison.

03

Compare frame consistency, not only peak FPS

Watch whether camera pans and crowded areas produce fewer frame-time spikes. Avoid simultaneously updating drivers, clearing shaders, changing overlays or raising graphics presets. Those changes can mask the HAGS result.

An identical test environment makes the answer meaningful.

04

Keep the stable choice and revisit after major changes

If turning HAGS off reduces repeated stutter, leave it off for your current setup. If it makes no difference or helps when on, return to the better state. Retest after a major Windows or GPU-driver update if performance changes again.

Epic describes HAGS as a performance option, not a mandatory rule.

Avoid one-size-fits-all “HAGS doubles FPS” claims

Windows GPU scheduling affects systems differently. Keep changes reversible and do not edit registry switches from old videos.

Specific errors

If the first four checks do not help

Use these specific clues to avoid unnecessary changes.

HAGS control does not appear

It may not be supported or exposed by your Windows/GPU combination.

FPS differs only on the first run

Shader-cache activity can distort the first benchmark.

Turning it off makes another game worse

Choose based on your overall usage and the games you actually play.

No repeatable difference at all

Look for more likely stutter causes instead of endlessly toggling HAGS.

Common questions

Quick FAQs

Should HAGS be on for Fortnite?

It depends on your PC; Epic includes enabling it as one performance suggestion, but you should test.

Does changing HAGS require a restart?

Yes. Restart Windows before judging the result.

Can HAGS fix all micro-stutters?

No. Shader compilation, CPU load and drivers may have different causes.

Is this setting inside Fortnite?

No. It is a Windows graphics setting.

What if my PC has no HAGS option?

Skip that step and follow other supported troubleshooting instead.
