The quick answer

A moving mic icon does not guarantee the other player hears you.

First ask: can teammates hear you, or can you not hear them? Open Fortnite’s social/profile panel and choose the same Party chat or Game chat as your teammates. Then check Audio settings, the selected input and output devices, voice volume, mute/Push-to-Talk and Windows microphone permissions. Epic’s current voice chat controls ↗ and voice troubleshooting ↗ cover these checks.

Who actually cannot hear whom?

A mic indicator is only an activity clue; output and channel configuration can still be wrong.

My icon flashes but nobody hears me Start with input microphone, mute/Push-to-Talk, Windows permission and Party/Game chat selection. Check mic input ↓
Simple checklist

4 easy things to try, in order

Use one short test with a trusted teammate after each change; do not change ten audio settings at once.

01

Join the correct Fortnite chat and check mute

From your profile/social menu, choose Party chat for your party or Game chat for the current island/team when supported. Verify your friend is not muted and that voice communication is allowed. Epic describes the modern chat controls ↗.

Opening Discord or another device can also change where players are listening; verify the intended chat is the one everyone is using.

02

Check microphone input, permission and Push-to-Talk

In Fortnite Audio settings select the actual microphone if input-device choices are shown. Check whether Push-to-Talk is enabled and its button is pressed. On Windows 11 open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and allow microphone access for desktop apps. Epic’s PC voice troubleshooting ↗ covers microphone permissions.

Use Windows Sound settings to test that the selected microphone reacts to speech; the Fortnite icon alone is not a complete microphone test.

03

Check playback output and voice volume

In Fortnite Settings → Audio raise voice-chat volume, then set the output to your actual headphones/speakers. Epic recommends checking the named Audio Output Device instead of the wrong default selection when audio disappears. Epic output-device guidance ↗. In Windows Sound, check the app and system output levels.

If gameplay audio works but teammates are silent, the voice-chat device/channel is a better lead than reinstalling Fortnite.

04

Restart chat and check known issues

Leave and rejoin voice chat, fully restart Fortnite and test again with one teammate. Check Epic service status ↗ and Epic’s voice-chat issue notice ↗ if multiple players are affected. If the same problem happens only in one island, check that the island supports Game chat.

Do not disable Windows security features or share account information to fix a muted icon.

The flashing microphone symbol is not proof of successful transmission.

The icon may respond to local audio input while a permission, channel, mute, device or service problem prevents communication. Check both sides with one teammate and use the official controls. Communication restrictions may also depend on account or parental settings.

Specific errors

If the headset still has no voice audio

Match the symptom to the correct part of the audio path.

Game sounds play but friends are silent.

Focus on voice volume, output choice, Party/Game chat and muted teammates. Start with Epic voice settings ↗, not a graphics driver reinstall.

Windows does not detect the microphone.

Try the hardware connection or headset input selection in Windows first. Fortnite cannot transmit speech from an input Windows never receives.

The problem appears only for one friend.

Check whether either player muted the other and whether Epic has reported muted-teammate issues ↗.

Chat works on another device but not PC.

Compare the platform/device chat session, Windows permissions and the headset device assignments; sign out of extra sessions if they are taking audio away.

Still cannot hear or be heard?

Record whether the problem is outgoing or incoming voice, your headset/mic model, Windows version, which chat you joined, and whether the Windows microphone test works. Avoid guessing based on the icon alone.

Common questions

Quick FAQs

Why does my mic icon flash if nobody hears me?

Fortnite can show activity without proving that the chat reached another player. Input settings, channel, mute and permissions may still prevent communication.

Is Party chat the same as Game chat?

No. Party chat is for your party, while Game chat is for people in the supported current island or game instance.

Why do I hear the game but not my teammate?

Voice-chat volume, device routing, muted players or a different chat channel can affect voice audio independently of the rest of the game.

Should I reinstall Fortnite for a silent mic icon?

Not first. Epic recommends checking chat, device selection, volume and permissions before destructive steps.

Can the problem be on Epic’s side?

Yes. Epic documents voice-chat issues and posts status updates, so check official sources if the problem appears widely or suddenly.
