The quick answer
Start with your connection, not your graphics settings.
In VALORANT, turn on the incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs. If they show loss, pause background downloads, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and restart your router when practical. If only one server or time of day is affected, check Riot’s status and your ISP route. Test one change at a time.
Jump to the fixes01 Check if it’s really packet loss
Before changing anything, confirm that the issue is network-related. Low ping or a fast speed test does not automatically mean you have zero packet loss.
- Open Settings → Video → Stats in VALORANT.
- Turn on Packet Loss (incoming/outgoing if shown). Use the available text or graph display.
- Play a custom match or practice session and watch what happens during the lag spike. If the graph rises at the same time, continue with the network fixes below.
02 Fix VALORANT packet loss — step by step
Try these checks in order. Retest in a similar match after each one so you know what actually helps.
Pause downloads and uploads
Close cloud backups, Windows or game updates, large downloads and video streams on your PC. If the network is shared, test at a quieter time too. This is especially useful if loss appears while someone is uploading or streaming.
Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
Connect your PC to the router using Ethernet if available. If packet loss disappears, wireless interference, signal strength or congestion may be the cause. If you cannot use Ethernet, test closer to the router with a stable connection.
Restart your router
When it is convenient for everyone using the connection, restart the router through its normal controls, wait for it to reconnect and retest the game. A restart can clear a temporary problem; it will not repair ongoing ISP or route issues.
Check Riot service status and your chosen server
See whether Riot reports an outage or degraded service. If available, compare another nearby server in VALORANT. Loss happening only on one server can suggest a route or service issue rather than a problem with your PC.
Try Network Buffering only if loss persists
VALORANT offers a Network Buffering option that may smooth uneven packet delivery. Compare the available settings and keep the one that feels more consistent. It is a trade-off and does not actually repair missing packets on your connection.
03 Find out where the problem starts
The pattern of the packet loss often tells you what to investigate next.
04 Still happening?
Write down the affected server, times, whether the issue occurs on Ethernet, your incoming/outgoing packet-loss readings, and whether other games or devices are affected. Check with your ISP if the network path seems unstable; contact VALORANT Support if you suspect a game or service-specific issue.
Avoid turning off your firewall, editing router port rules, or installing third-party network “optimizers” just to see whether the number changes.
05 Frequently asked questions
Why do I have packet loss with good internet speed?
Speed tests measure throughput to a test server; they cannot guarantee a clean path to VALORANT’s game servers. Wireless interference, local congestion and ISP routing can still cause packet loss.
Can VALORANT packet loss happen with low ping?
Yes. Ping measures delay, while packet loss means some game data does not arrive. You can see a low average ping and still experience brief packet loss spikes.
Does switching DNS fix packet loss?
Usually not. DNS affects how names are resolved, not the reliability of the actual game traffic once you are connected. If the issue is downloads or connecting to Riot Client, DNS is a separate troubleshooting topic.
Should I enable Network Buffering?
You can test it if the connection is inconsistent. It may reduce visible stuttering in exchange for some responsiveness. It does not eliminate loss on your network or replace a stable connection.
