The quick answer

Restart Riot Client first, then check Riot service notices.

Riot identifies VAL 56 as LegalInfoInitFailure. Its published first step is to restart Riot Client. If it keeps appearing, check current support banners. When no service issue is reported and the error continues, submit a Riot Support ticket.

01 What does VAL 56 mean?

VAL 56 appears when the client cannot complete its legal-information initialization step. You may see the code during login or startup before reaching the main menu.

The error name tells you which startup step failed; it does not prove that your account is banned, that a particular file is corrupt, or that your hardware is at fault.

02 Start with these simple checks

  1. Fully close the Riot Client

Exit VALORANT and close Riot Client using its Windows system-tray icon if it is still running. Then relaunch it normally.

  2. Try signing in one more time

Allow Riot Client to finish loading before opening VALORANT. Avoid repeated rapid login attempts.

  3. Restart Windows if the error repeats

Use Start → Power → Restart. This clears a client process that may not have closed completely.

  4. Check the Riot Support site

Look for banners about login, game services, or Riot Client. If a service problem is active, wait and try after it clears.

03 If VAL 56 continues after a restart

If Riot is not reporting a service issue, try only reversible checks that help isolate client startup problems:

  • Confirm your PC date, time, and time zone are set correctly.
  • If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect it for one test on your normal network.
  • Check whether Riot Client has an update waiting to finish.
  • Note whether VAL 56 also appears on another normal internet connection, if one is available.
These are general checks, not a guaranteed Riot-specific fix for VAL 56. The official published advice remains restart → check alerts → contact Support.

04 When Riot Support should take over

If the same code returns after those checks and there is no active outage, send a support request. Include a screenshot, when the problem began, whether the Riot Client opens, and which steps you already tried.

That information helps Support separate an account/session problem from a broader Riot Client service issue.

05 Avoid unnecessary fixes

  • Do not edit random game files or the registry because the message includes “LegalInfo”.
  • Do not disable Windows security or your antivirus permanently.
  • Do not reinstall Windows or VALORANT as the first step for this code.
  • Do not assume the error is an account ban without a separate enforcement notice.

06 Frequently asked questions

Is VAL 56 an account ban?

No. Riot lists it as LegalInfoInitFailure, a client startup error. An account restriction would have a different explanation.

Should I delete Riot Client files?

Not as a first move. Riot’s official VAL 56 guidance starts with restarting Riot Client and checking service banners.

What if VAL 56 keeps appearing?

Capture the exact error and submit a Riot Support ticket if there is no ongoing client service alert.
