The quick answer
Start with the right fix, not random tweaks.
VAN 68 generally means Vanguard lost a connection or session. Riot starts with PC restart, Windows time and vgc checks—not DNS alone. DNS flushing or trying a public resolver makes sense only if Riot Client name resolution is also behaving badly.

01 / Start with Riot’s documented order
Restart Windows
Use a full restart before changing DNS.
Confirm time settings
Check time and time zone, then vgc service startup.
Test with stable networking
Avoid VPNs and try Ethernet where possible.
Change DNS only if relevant
Record original DNS settings so you can easily restore them if nothing improves.
02 / Change DNS in Windows Control Panel
Open Control Panel
Choose Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
Open adapter options
Click Change adapter settings, then right-click the active adapter > Properties.
Select IPv4 or IPv6
Choose the matching protocol properties, then record current automatic/manual addresses before changing.
Enter a matched resolver pair
Use both preferred and alternate values from one provider in the directory above. Confirm, flush DNS if needed, and test once.
03 / FAQ
Will Cloudflare always beat Google or Quad9?
No. Performance depends on your location and ISP path.
Is DNS the main cause of VAN 68?
Not necessarily. Riot directs players first to Vanguard service and restart checks.
