The quick answer
Check Vanguard startup before editing the registry.
A missing Vanguard notification-area icon does not automatically mean the anti-cheat driver is missing. Check hidden tray icons, startup apps, and Vanguard service status first. If the files are gone or the icon never returns, repair or reinstall through Riot.
Jump into the guide01Windows startup entry: where it lives
Windows registry — reference path
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run is one location Windows can use for startup apps.
Vanguard install location — verify first
A common installation folder is C:\Program Files\Riot Vanguard; executable names and startup registration can vary by version.
vgtray.exe Run-string value for every version. Do not invent one.02Check the tray and installed app
Expand hidden icons
Click the notification area caret; the icon may simply be hidden.
Open Task Manager → Startup apps
Look for the installed Riot/Vanguard entry and check if Windows has disabled it.
Restart your PC once
The notification process may have failed to start after a patch or interrupted boot.
Verify Vanguard status in Apps and Services
If you cannot find its installed files or
vgcservice, use Riot’s official repair/reinstallation steps.
03Safe read-only checks
To view—not alter—the service and system state, use these Windows commands in Command Prompt:
sc query vgc reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
sc create, driver registration hacks, and guessed registry values. They can create broken services or security warnings.Frequently asked questions
Can Vanguard work without a visible tray icon?
The tray program and anti-cheat services are separate parts; a missing icon alone is not conclusive.
Can I manually register vgtray with one command?
There is no one-size-fits-all Riot-endorsed re-registration command. Repair the official installation instead.
