The quick answer
VALORANT Freezes PC When Alt-Tabbing on Windows 11
If your display freezes during Alt-Tab, try Win + Ctrl + Shift + B once to request a graphics-driver reset; the screen may flash. If Windows recovers, save your work and test fullscreen versus windowed fullscreen, overlays, HDR and driver updates. Windows GameConfigStore is a separate registry area from Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO); never confuse the two when following .reg guides.

02 The reversible troubleshooting order
- Use Win + Ctrl + Shift + B once. If the PC is truly unresponsive and the display does not recover, do not keep blindly repeating shortcuts.
- Update your GPU driver and Windows. Revert any recent overclock, overlay or capture-hook changes.
- Switch between fullscreen and windowed fullscreen; disable Discord, NVIDIA/AMD overlay or Xbox capture for one test.
- Temporarily test with one monitor, matching refresh rates, and HDR/VRR toggled consistently.
- Only if the issue clearly tracks window composition, consider the optional MPO workaround below after creating a restore point. Undo it if there is no improvement.
03 Optional MPO registry experiment and rollback
MPO is a Windows display-composition feature. Some graphics vendors have published MPO-related troubleshooting guidance, but disabling it is not a universal VALORANT fix. The downloadable registry files are offered as an advanced, reversible experiment.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm] "OverlayTestMode"=dword:00000005

Frequently asked questions
Does Win+Ctrl+Shift+B always fix the freeze?
No. It requests a display driver reset and may recover the screen; it does not solve every system hang.
Is GameConfigStore the MPO path?
No. MPO workarounds commonly use the Dwm registry path under HKLM.
Do I need to disable MPO permanently?
No. Treat it as a reversible diagnostic and restore the default if it does not help.
